MGCR 222 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Job Performance, Shared Belief, Role Conflict
Document Summary
Two or more people interacting interdependently to achieve a common goal. Exerts influences on group members, who can also influence each other. Formal work groups- established by organizations to facilitate achievement of goals. Task forces or project teams (temporary) and committees (permanent) Informal groups- arise naturally due to common interests of members. Forming- members orient themselves in an ambiguous situation. These are for new groups; well-acquainted groups often skip many stages. Stability punctuated by a critical first meeting, midpoint change in activity and final rush to task completion. Size- smaller groups have higher member satisfaction (more friendships, less conflict) Actual performance increases to a point with size. Average performance per member decreases with increasing size. Additive tasks (sum of individuals" performance)- performance increases with size. Disjunctive tasks (best member"s performance)- performance increases with size. Conjunctive tasks (limited by weakest member) performance decreases with size. Diversity- more diverse groups have a harder time communicating and being cohesive.
