Intrinsic motivation- self applied, feelings of accomplishment (autonomous) Extrinsic motivation- applied by external sources, benefits (controlled) Believes that there is an order in which needs are met (hierarchy of needs) Believes all needs can be pursued and met at once. Existence needs (physiological, safety), relatedness needs (social), growth needs (es- teem, self-actualization) Effective managers have low affiliation and high power needs. Expectancy- motivation is determined by the expected outcome of a job. Instrumentality- probability that a 1st level outcome will be rewarded. Valence- whether there is a link to a person"s individual goals. Input- perception of your contribution to the job. Outcome- perception of what you receive from your inputs. Reference source- an other used for comparison of input/output ratio. When you set a goal, you filter what you perceive. Financial rewards are not always effective, sometimes they actually reduce re- sults.
