Standards are tunes that have become very well know and that most musicians can play. Era of the great american songbook featuring tunes by composers like gershwin, Berlin, cole porter, rogers and hart, jerome kern. A jazz standard is a song played by jazz musicians chosen not only for strong melody but also good chord progression for improvisaion: strong harmonic progression that provides a variety of space for improvisaion. Melodic: pleasing in voice leading: notes support and sill well together, foundaional, strong melody has harmonic implicaions. Miles davis moved away from louis armstrong, from performer to arist: symbol for black power. Song originally composed by cole porter for musical, silk stockings 1954: writen later, post 1950, diferent interpretaions of tunes to one son used, original cast recording in 1955. 32 bar songs usually divided into 8 bar secions: usually 12 bar form these 8 bac secions are labeled with leters as in a , b , c .
