Monday February 14, 2011 Lecture Seventeen Must know the names of Mozart’s 3 famous operas (in English): Don Giovanni, The Marriage of Figaro and the Magic Flute.  Don Giovanni is an opera buffa, an Italian genre of opera (the most important and famous operas were Italian at the time) Mozart wrote and promoted opera. Picture in notes: Haydn at the keyboard, conducting. This is where the conductor would have been, and he would have been playing in the continuo group who would accompany the recitatives.  So the composer would be playing keyboard, part of the continuo group, and the first violinist would be in charge of the rest of the orchestra.  It is only now that the conductor is not in the ensemble.
