Document Summary

Inflammation is highly regulated by cytokines and leukocytes. Platelets clotting factors and release of cytokines to communicate with leukocytes. Lymphocytes fxn is situation dependent (amt of bacterial infiltration as well) Mediators may be produced locally by cells at the site of infl or may be derived from circulating inactive precursors typically synthesized from the liver that are activated at the site of infl. The liver is a major source of mediators of the infl rxn. Cytokines are signaling molecules which allow various cells to be in contact with one another: after cerebral infarct, mediators from the blood, csf and cells in the brain act in a coordinated fashion to orchestrate tissue healing. Cell-derived mediators are normally sequestered in intracellular granules and are rapidly released upon activation or are synthesized de novo in response to a stimulus. Plasma protein-derived mediators circulate in inactive form and typically undergo proteolytic cleavage to acquire biological fxn.
