Document Summary

Leukopoiesis = production of white blood cells. Pluripotential stem cells from the bone marrow can either self-replicate by division or divide and differentiate into different blood cells. An inducer is applied and causes the division of stem cells, which become committed stem cells. With stimulation, division and differentiation, they become either one of the different blood cells. Hematopoietic growth factors (hgf) cytokines influencing the proliferation and differentiation of blood cell precursors. Substances (proteins or peptides) which are released by one cell and affect the growth, development and activity of another cell. Injection of bone marrow stem cells can reconstitute all hematopoietic cell types. First month: produced in the yolk sac of developing fetus. After 6 months, hematopoiesis starts developing in all bones until birth. Infant develops liver & spleen, where hematopoiesis takes place. Flat bones of skull, shoulder blades, pelvis, vertebrae, sternum, ribs, proximal epiphyses of long bones. Epiphysis: swelling at the end of a bone.
