Document Summary
Ovaries are responsible for the production of gametes (eggs) and are important endocrine organs. Menstrual cycle: before day 1: at high levels of progesterone and estrogen and lack of implantation, the corpus luteum breaks down, day 1: the corpus luteum is the source of steroid hormones. Since it is broken down, the concentration of steroid hormone drops. Progesterone and estrogen are absent, so the endometrium lining begins to degrade, which can be seen as vaginal bleeding: the menses (bleeding) continues for 5 days. This increase allows a new cycle to begin: during ovulation, there"s a surge of lh and fsh. We do not understand why there"s a blip in fsh at this point. It may be because both hormones are made by the same cells and the tick in fsh is a byproduct of. Lh, but this will not be tested: the level of steroid hormones is directly linked with the development of the follicle.
