Document Summary

Phil 200 - lecture 1 - introduction to philosophy. In 399 bce, socrates of athens was put on trial for corrupting the youth . He was then convicted and sentenced to death. Socrates is considered the first philosopher because as far as we know, he is the first one to describe himself using this term. Of course there were philosophers before socrates. Pre-socratics : people whom we consider philosophers before socrates. This term shows that socrates is a turning point/landmark in philosophy. The philosophical traditions in ancient india and china precede classical greek philosophy. The philosophical tradition that begins with socrates is predominantly western . He is known only through others, primarily his student plato. He wrote everything under other people"s names. Plato wrote many dialogues in which socrates was usually the main speaker. He reported on dialogues that socrates held. However, he also used socrates as a character espousing what is believed to be his own views.
