Strawson: freedom is built into the judgements we make, expressions or characterizations of the situations that our reactive attitudes respond to: our reactive attitudes only make sense if we assume people act freely. If freedom is built into our psychology, the determinism of the universe is irrelevant. If we did, we"d no longer be treating people as participants in inter-personal exchanges and no longer have any reactive attitudes to them: this, according to strawson, seems nearly impossible to imagine given our psychology. If we really believe freedom has no sense, it will be impossible to behave like. It is ridiculous to think we should learn some philosophy and stop acting like humans! So debate about the rationality of any human practice in its entirety makes no sense.
