Aristotle"s book is about the route to happiness. Rational part of soul; 2 parts, each have virtues. Wisdom: (scientific knowledge/understanding of the naturally honorable) Practical (what ought to be/fulfilling obligation/the means to ends; cleverness) Prudence/practical wisdom: how to achieve worthwhile/correct ends. Promotes living well w/ sensitivity to the particularities of diff situations. Acquired only through experience; not in young people. Virtue of character isn"t enough; ex. justice as an end; the attainment of that end matters. Prudence isn"t enough; ex. knows how to get what they want (clever), but has wrong ends. Be prudent, need virtue of chara, to have them, need prudence. Prudence isn"t just necessary for virtue of chara; it is sufficient for it. If you have prudence, you have all the virtues of chara. Prudent person will have all virtues of chara. Rational calculation of the best good possible to achieve; requires voc/prudence. Prudence is the sovereign virtue in the practical sphere.
