PHIL 242 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Identity Politics, Police Brutality, Intersectionality
Document Summary
Intersectionality has been used as a critique of mainstream feminism. Black women are treated differently than white women. Truth has not experienced fragility and helplessness; she was a slave and had her children taken away from her; oppression worked very differently for her. It is not black plus women oppression; having brute force vs fragile. The way black and woman are constructed were contradictory. Oppression is not additive; it is interactive; being black and being a woman interfere and interact and change the form of oppression which a black woman experiences. Assumed universality of femininity, the way that woman is constructed is an exclusive construction and prioritizes white femininity (who complain about being treated as fragile). Early argument of intersectionality: if we don"t consider these categories together and how they alter each other, we are not going to be succeeding in the liberatory projects we want. Why is feminism only focusing on some women"s issues (white)
