Gayle rubin, the traffic in women aim: to develop a definition of the sex/gender system, relationships by which females becomes oppressed women. How an (infant) person becomes a woman. Not disputing the sexual difference at biological level, but made through social constructs. Relations that make you a woman in economy, anthropology, psychoanalysis: sex is a given, gender is social construct. A product of social relations between economic values, social relations, and kinship. Marx & engels and the economy: very strong at explaining class oppression, but overlooks sex oppression. Explains how capitalism benefits from women"s work. Does not explain why women have to be exploited. One group has to be exploited, but why women: cannot explain why women are oppressed outside capitalist economies if you think a sexuality is obviously normal. It"s cultural: cannot explain why women are oppressed even inside a capitalist economy. Isolates sex and gender from modes of production.
