Hence, the truth value is the reference of a sentence. Frege holds that truth-values are actually objects, just like any other abstract object. This means that a (declarative) sentence are in fact modes of presentation of one of two truth-values: true or false. Frege: the thought (or a proposition) is the sense of a declarative sentence. Empty reference principle: the number given by adding 2 to the natural number directly before 0 denotes nothing. This is because the subdesignator the natural number directly before 0 denotes nothing. The whole fails to reference when a part fails to reference. It is possible for a sentence to have a sense but no reference (it cannot have a truth value. ) Frege: the thought loses value for us as soon as we recognize that the reference for one of its parts is missing. It is the striving for truth that drives us always to advance from the sense to the reference.
