Heidegger begins his discussion with the meaning of being in general
Near the first passage (that we have to piece apart for our first assignment), he states that
fundamental ontology is carried our in existential analytic
The existential analytic tries to develop what’s already included in the concept of Dasein
and in our own being of Dasein
He deals with the worldliness of the world, and then he discusses the “who” of Dasein
The “who” of Dasein is implied in the “being” of being-in-the-world
We still have to explain what the hyphens mean in being-in-the-world
What is implied in “being-in?”
1. Befindlichkeit
Passive
Attached the past – it’s the sense of, we’re already here
Translated as state of mind
It doesn’t really have to do with the mind
It means to be found there, being there
Reminds us of the “Da” in the Dasein
Dasein is not everywhere
EX: The TA is a Dasein
He is here but not simultaneously in the room
Dasein is taking up a certain position, location in space and time
This is what the “Da” means
However, there are further implications in the “Da”
EX: Sartre talks about how we find ourselves here, there’s no reason to explain this
This belongs to the concept of the “Da”
The reason why I’m here is not totally clear to me, but it is a contingent fact
Dasein is not able to arbitrate where it is or when it appears to be in certain situations
Dasein is embedded in the interrelations in the world
The mood is not always considered as the most important moment of our mental
activities
