Being with others, Heidegger calls this das man
The “they” is anonymous
There’s such a strong critique of modernity, where everyone in the assembly line is
replaceable
Chapter 5, Division 1
Being as such
What are the structures of the “we” world and how is it possible?
We’re pulling out of the descriptions from what we’ve already worked through
We’re not laying on new structures – we’re recollecting them out of the self-forgetfulness
of Dasein itself
Are these structures really showing themselves? Or is Heidegger forcing them? ***
Dasein has four main existentials that make it possible for it to be in the world:
Befindlichkeit, Verfallen, Verstehen, and Rede
These things are not supposed to be taken as additive
They are equiprimordial existential structure, so there’s an order to explication that takes
place
These things are already always acting
1. Befindlichkeit state of mind
It’s not really a state of mind. This translation was heavily criticized
Professor Buckley prefers the German words
It’s a good work in German
Dasein discovers its state of mind through various states, which Heidegger calls moods
It can also be translated as disposition
Moods
Heidegger says that Dasein
“I always find myself in the world in some sort of mood”
My projectivity is that I have an affective orientation
There are lots of moves
The orientation in the basic projectivity is mood-like
Heidegger is putting an affective dispositional character as the core of Dasein’s being
They’re already attending our comportment
The structure suggests that there’s already an affective orientation in Dasein
Affects don’t happen to us, as a result of something or an event; they already tending to
something, Dasein is always in a particular mood
-Core dispositions
-More about affect than with ‘mind’ (whatever ‘mind’ is)
-All of our cognitive orientations are always going to be grounded in some sort of mood
there is already affective orientation in Dasein
Stimmung: Attunement emphasizes something else: kind of listening
-Opens up another possibility for Dasein
