Structure and function of the central nervous system (late 1800s) People started to describe the function of the different areas of the brain (ex. People attempted to use this idea to treat the "bad regions" of the brain, but simply eliminating the said region. This is why numerous pre-frontal lobotomies were performed in the mid 1900s. this was done with an apparatus that would be inserted into the eye socket or nose to pierce through the thinnest region covering the brain. Holes were also drilled into the skull for the same purpose. Why we don"t know how the brain works. The human brain has ~100,000 neurons and ~100million synapses per mm3 of tissue, therefore to sequence the brain it would take 1. 3giga tb. This is equivalent of half of the world"s storage. When we look at a face, there are specific neurons in each temporal lobe of the visual cortex that gets selectively activated.
