Lecture Twenty One- Friday, February 19 , 2010th -Methods of taking pulse: Method of Palpation -Palpation means using the sense of touch to make the measurement -Attach cuff -Measure radial pulse Method of Auscultation -Use a stethoscope (use your hearing)  Korotkoff Sounds o Hear sounds systolic pressure o When the sounds go away diastolic pressure Oscillometry -Like the machines they use at pharmacies -Looking at the pulsations of the pressure in the cuff -Why is blood pressure important? Determines flow through our organs. -Why does BP have to be regulated? Need BP to be different depending on what you’re doing, need regulation if you ever get hurt, for example. -MAP (Mean Arterial Pressure) = ~100 mmHg  memorize Autoregulation -A regulation of flow -Many of the organs autoregulate: brain, heart, kidneys -Gut, intestines don’t autoregulate -The heart is the first organ to be fed by the arterial syst
