Nationalism: identi cation with and loyalty to one"s nation expressed politically to support sense of belongingness. Under feudalism, no nations, no states. rather a complex web of alliances and loyalties. Bitter con icts over religion led to peace of westphalia. State: legit use of force and collection of taxes within de ned borders assigned to single ruler/gov. Formation of nation-states did not end con ict. state, in fact, is a more ef cient killing machine. Eu formed to change nature of sovereignty and un-link it from nation; pooled sovereignty designed to end con ict. Currently, idea of pooled sovereignty is under heavy criticism. Positive form of nationalism: scotland (history separates scots from english) Recent revival of scottish culture led to political reform, known as devolution. referendums to stay in eu. History shows that nationalism is risky and controversial.
