Why and how do social movements occur. Similarities: both contentious studies and social moments are a collective action, both are outside institutionalized politics: the expression of political differences through stable and established channels and organizations such as party politics, electoral politics, clientelism. Unconventional ad con ictive politics > different levels of con ict. Sm as linear process: discontent sms but sm is not collective psychology or discontent. Resource mobilization: organization, networks, there are transnational movements. Sm is not automatic result of discontent, mobilization of resources is needed. Elite involvement (agency that does the mobilization and organization) De nition of resources: includes legitimacy, money, facilities and labour. Political opportunity: features of regime and institutions that facilitate or inhibit a political actor"s action > ex: student movement, democracy movement in china 1989. Social actors need to be aware of it and informed of it. Systematic analysis of context, structure, and resources. Focus on discourses, languages, symbols as indicators of beliefs and claims.
