Poli244- lecture #22- ir and the global south. Due at the beginning of monday"s class. Tas will be there to collect: some near upstairs entrance, some near downstairs. Global south refers to countries that have historically been underdeveloped. No term for underdeveloped countries (ex: third world) is perfect to describe them. Does ir theory apply to third world states? point or another. Inter-state wars in africa and latin america have been relatively rare. Africa has more states than any other continent (52) Most african, asian, middle eastern states were colonies of european powers at one. Many more civil wars in these places. Calls into question the realist concepts of ir theory. Argues that we need to update ir to fit these countries. Civil wars have been much more common in africa, asia and the middle east. African state formation reflected the balance of power in that time period.
