Ir theory and the global south lecture notes. Africa has more states (52) than any other continent. Most african, asia, middle eastern states were colonies of european powers at one point or another. Inter-state wars in africa and latin america have been relatively rare. Civil wars have been much more common in africa, asia, middle east. European powers carved up africa at the 1884-85 berlin conference. Germany, france, uk, italy, belgium, holland, portugal, spain, usa were present. Most present-day african borders date back to then. British forces assisted rebels in bringing down ottoman empire. Sykes-picot agreement (1916) between britain and france secretly carved up. Countries that arose out of the territory covered by the agreement have become conflict zones: syria, lebanon, israel/palestine, and iraq. Most african states gained independence from european powers between. 1958 and 1965: governed in an authoritarian way. Most of these were not democracies-governed by one leader.
