Document Summary

Not much happened at the 5+1 talks. Us increasing monetary aid and military aid to syria: medical aid, training, army tools. 1970s: from war to peace: bilateral agreements b/w israel and arab states, shifted to where it is now b/w israel and palestine, 1973/yom kippur war syrian-egyptian surprise attacks; israeli counter- offensive successful. Initial battles successful which caught israel by surprise, but israel was able to successfully answer back. Saddat now head of egypt: ongoing war w/ israel not sustainable, no longer an egypt interest, so more open to bilateral talks, 1973 kissinger (us) begins shuttle diplomacy. Still used a lot now: 1977 sadat makes historic visit to israel. Really hard to understate why this happened. Personal willingness to make this visit opened up the way for talks to continue: 1978 - camp david: 13 days private negotiations b/w sadat, begin, & carter. Bilateral peace agreement b/w egypt and israel.
