Initial battles successful which caught israel by surprise, but israel was able to successfully answer back. Saddat now head of egypt: ongoing war w/ israel not sustainable, no longer an egypt interest, so more open to bilateral talks, 1973 kissinger (us) begins shuttle diplomacy. Still used a lot now: 1977 sadat makes historic visit to israel. Really hard to understate why this happened. Personal willingness to make this visit opened up the way for talks to continue: 1978 - camp david: 13 days private negotiations b/w sadat, begin, & carter. Bilateral peace agreement b/w egypt and israel.
