POLI 378 Lecture 3: Conference #3
Document Summary
Amicus curae- they can sponsor a case but they usually intervene because sponsoring a case is expensive. A way for the public to express their opinions in the courts, yes you have big companies or groups who have the money to lobby but it"s important for the legal system. The readings said it"s a way for interest groups to generalize important opinions- can get legitimate support and be more successful than going through the legislative route- not as much influence with the legislature. Dodging the whole democratic system that canada is built on. Very rare that by lobbying courts you"re not lobbying the parliament. Not going through the house but only to the courts. It hinders democracy because of big corporations with money. But it enhances it because each institution is not doing what it"s supposed to. It should exist because it protects people and gives them a voice.
