Psyc 100- lecture #10 midterm 1 review. Psychology: stuffy of behavior and the mental and physiological process. It is an empirical science and uses the scientific method: we start with an observation hypothesis prediction experiment hypothesis denied or confirmed. He wants to analyze consciousness into basic elements, he relied on introspection, sensations, feelings, he thought that basic elements would combine to form complex mental events. He saw psychology as objective and as a natural science like chemistry, biology. He wanted to observe behavior, so you could predict it. He used the behaviorist manifesto: psychology should be objective, psychology should be able to predict behavior, no qualitative differences between human and non-human behavior. Psychophysiological model: highly reductionist approach, behavior can be explained by the physiology behind it. Aim is to understand things from a very basic level. Believes we have these innate psychological drives that conflict with what society expects of us.
