Document Summary

Music and language are special, complex forms of auditory processing. Different regions of the brain are involved in different aspects of auditory processing. Brain damage in specific areas of auditory association cortex can cause very specific deficits. For example, the basic underlying beat in music is processed in the right auditory cortex (tapping your foot to the beat). Harmony is recognized in an area of the inferior frontal cortex (several music notes being played at once). Language processing will be covered in its own lecture. Particular combinations of musical notes can be perceived as happy, sad, pleasant, unpleasant, consonant, dissonant, etc. And, this information is processed separately from other auditory information. Amusia is the inability to perceive or produce melodic music. For example, people with amusia might be unable to sing or recognize the happy birthday song.
