Document Summary

We have a motivation to see us positively and accurately. Self-serving construal: how we interpret and integrate information around us. The above average effect: most people evaluate themselves as above average in positive traits and below average in negative traits (e. g. how good a drive you are). People tent to interpret the question in most benefiting way (e. g. what defines a "good student"?) -"better than average effect" is lessened for less ambiguous traits. The degree of the effect is also affected by level of self esteem. Self affirmation: to help maintain and restore self worth. Experiment: when people think about core attributes that they care about and also feel good for, they are better at coping stress and performing tasks--- cortisol level rise higher with no affirmation. Protect self and others, also reduce aggression towards outgroup members. Downward and upward reflection vs comparison: feeling good for other"s achievement (only for when the domain is not relevant to self concept)
