Document Summary
Self-evaluation: how we evaluate the self, driven by motivations to see the self (2) , positively, accurately. But that one mattered more to us, so we consider ourselves punctual: lower self-esteem = less likely to do this, self-serving construal is what drives the better-than- average effect. Especially if the comparison is a close other (even though close people are the ones we want to be happy, it particularly hurts when someone close to us is doing better in a domain that we care about) Positive illusions: holding overly favourable views of the world, including the self, may enhance well-being & physical health (taylor & Downsides to positive illusions: negative long-term consequences for psychological and social functioning, short-term benefits = mostly positive, long-term costs = mostly negative. Self-verification strategies: things we tend to do to illicit that kind of feedback, selective attention, identity cues, self-selection.
