We must make sense of what"s in front of us; interactions, feelings, surroundings, etc. President obama gets construed in multiple ways; many perceptions and fits to many schemas or different people; but he"s really just one person. Activation = retrieval of an element of social knowledge from long term memory. Once knowledge is activated it can shape our attention, construal, memory, and behavior. Results from interplay or relatively bottom up (data driven) and top down (knowledge driven) influences.
