Document Summary
Observation to understand or predict what people do, imagine they will act according to their beliefs and attitudes: not this easy! Measuring attitudes is not enough to predict behavior. Attitudes don"t always align with what people think: different social setting, want to please (ex: great food! Cognitive dissonance studies: study 1, before people thought rewards only affected response. Fester disagreed: student subjects performed very tedious, boring tasks. Ask to tell people it"s very interesting: offered 1$ or 20$ Students adjust their attitude justify their behaviour. Change their mind: they start believing the task is interesting. You are left to advocate an opinion different from your own: eg: write down arguments in support of raising tuition at mcgill . You come to shift your attitude in the direction of your behavior! If you are forced to change your behavior, you won"t change your attitude!
