PSYC 302 Lecture 13: Lecture 13 - October 21
Document Summary
Cortical images that show areas of the brain that have overlapping activation in two conditions: 1 woman is in pain in a scanner and cortical activation is measured. She was in the scanner and she had a light. Every time the light went on, it meant that her boyfriend in the other room was being put in pain. Turns out that the empathy of the woman for her boyfriend put in pain lit up some of the brain areas that lit up when she herself was put in pain. Interpreted this as evidence for empathy for pain and that this empathy for pain being processed in the same regions of the brain that process pain. You can see overlap in numerous places anterior cingulate cortex, right insula. Something interesting about this study did this study without seeing if empathy did anything to the pain sensitivity of the people experiencing empathy.
