Petrides- on the post-central gyrus we have 3 diff. cytoarchtenoic areas- 3,1,2- small receptive fields- initial stage in processing of somatosensoryinfo. Corkin- every patient that had tactile agnosia- astereognosis- failure to recognize objects by touch- they also have primary somatosensory problems- so the agnosia was secondary to the somatosensory impairment. Roland: also did the same study at about the same time as corkin- showed patients with post-central lesions lets say in the hand region failed to identify objects and also had primary somatosensory problems. Vboth showed lesions further posterior in the parietal lobe did not cause problems with identifying objects. Think pathway is from s1 to s2 in the parietal operculum then into the insula- this is the equivalent of the parietal occipital stream. Pg. 221 ruben article- they conclude something bizarre that goes against the whole article:
