PSYC 311 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Superior Frontal Sulcus, Brenda Milner, Motor Coordination
Document Summary
Psyc 311 human cognition and the brain. May 2nd lecture 1 introduction to basic neuroanatomy. The patterns are similar, but all brains are different. Cognitive processes to think, to remember, to learn, to be aware of, to realize etc. The kind of details introduced in cognition is much more focused on the cerebral cortex compared to, for instance, a medicine course. Gyrus (plural) the bumps created by two sulci. Sulcus (plural) the space between the folds of the cerebral cortex. The cortex has neurons (computational elements of the brain) that process/code information. The gray matter (cortex) is mostly filled with neuron"s bodies/somas. The white matter mostly consist of axons. Our brain uses environmental sensory information that is transduced through sensory organs and interpret this information. Action potentials the language of the neurons/brain. Neurotransmitters released by the dendrites as an action potential reaches their synapses. The attempt to understand the different relationships between different parts of the brain: ancient civilizations.
