How well can they describe personality: this week we consider concerns about the big 5-trait system. This is where personality psychology and clinical psychology overlap: personality disorders, aims at understanding psychological variations among more or less well functioning people. The 5 traits are thought of as getting to something fundamental and are thought to be independent of one another: validity, universality, lexical studies in: german, dutch, czech, polish, russian, italian, It is universal across cultures: consensus structure, temporal stability, something that is lasting, that we carry with us throughout our lives. There are some changes but it is mostly stable: prediction of important outcomes, well-being, work and relationships outcomes.
