Limitations and concerns with the big 5 traits: Big 5: framework for understanding general consistencies in social and emotional behaviour. Insufficient to talk about the big 5 alone. Can the big 5 system handle highly distinctive personalities. Someone so distinct, not in the range of patterns you"d expect based on the big 5. Has to do with the overlap between personality psychology and clinical. Personality- aims to understand psychological variation among more or less well functioning people. Isn"t really interested in predicting who will have problems in the world who should see a psychiatrist, focused on what would be thought of normal or subclinical levels of behaviour. In the diagnostic and statistic manual- acces 1 diagnosis- more transiat things like depression and anxiety, come on suddenly and may leave with treatment. Access 2 disorders- more long-standing problems, seem to relate fundamentally to the structure of individuals personality.
