The currency of everyday trait talk is "the generalization" When we speak about ourselves we are more likely to pay attention to situations (downplay traits) When we speak about other people, we are more likely to see it as dispositonal. Of course, personality generalization may be true or useful in a relative sense but they do not apply to every instance of a person"s behavior. "no matter how strong on a given trait, nobody is perfectly consistent; no single trait can characterize any person; life offers to many situations for people to do the same thing in each one" The most conscientious person can be late on occasion. "despite its important limitations, trait talk is useful and natural way to account for human individuality" Cross role variation in big 5 personality traits (sheldon et al 2005)
