Document Summary

Decline in negative evaluation of minorities after wwii but racial conflicts are not reduced. How we form impressions of others: dual process model (brewer"s) *identification -> whether person is relevant to our current goal -> stop analyzing stay with stereotype. *if relevant, bottom up analysis of the person on individualization and personalization level: continuum model (fiske and neuberg) *both theories are category based and top down process. Knowledge vs our belief in the accuracy of that knowledge (we all have stereotypes but we differ in our belief of this) Early on we learn all the available stereotypes. Rejection of stereotype results from non-prejudicial beliefs acquired in socialization process. Inhibition (a controlled process) requiring motivation and cognitive capacity (people with low prejudice have this inhibition to reject stereotype) Prime words: nigger, afro, poor, harlem, jazz, rhythm, ghetto . Then rate donald, a black person, on stereotype-relevant or irrelevant traits.
