Secure base: provided by caregiver when encountering new situations. *secure: distress upon separation but seeks comfort upon reunion. *anxious/ambivalent: distressed upon separation but cannot dissolve when reunited (wanting comfort but cannot be comforted) *avoidant: no sign of distress upon separation (lack of emotional response) Formed upon repeated interactions -> generalized into expectations in close relationships. Anxious/ambivalent correlates = jealousy and low self-esteem (unworthy self and worthy others) with hyper-approach style . Avoidant = hostile, uncommitted sexual relations, use alcohol/drugs to reduce tension instead of social support . *0% anxious-anxious or avoidant-avoidant couples out of all 400 couples! (people pair with others who fulfill their expectations: avoidant people want clingy partner and anxious people avoid intimate partner) *if man avoidant, rlt rated as more negative by both; if woman anxious, rlt rated as more negative only by man.
