Schema: knowledge structures, templates that guide our behavior, in terms of what to expect. When we do not really know what to expect. Women who are highly schematic for independence tended to preferentially encode and recall information relating to their independence. Informs them on their identity as an individual. Influences how we process information about the self and others. E. g. , search for information about others that is relate to their self-schemata. Helpful in ambiguous situations, but can be problematic if we fill in the gaps incorrectly. There are individual differences in the extent to which people identify with gender stereotypes. Those endorsing only sex-related attributes (e. g. , male endorses masculine/agentic traits) thought to be gender schematic. Individuals who are highly sex-typed encode all cross-sex interactions in sexual terms. Encode all members of the opposite sex in terms of sexual attractiveness.
