People with schizophrenia having hallucinations/experiences struggle to identify their own voices/thoughts as their own. Ted talk on hearing voices: others peoples adverse reaction to hearing voices + anxiety from this made the problem worse caused more voices + more hostile. Cbt and other psychotherapy try to change the way people relate to the voices rather than try to erase them. The speakers schizophrenic onset was during adulthood/college rather than adolescence, which links to her higher functioning and self recovery. First line of treatment for hallucinatory schizophrenia are antipsychotics/medications. Neuroleptic treatment of anxiety induce a rapid dec in symptoms. Within 24 hours there"s a dec in the severity and freq of hallucinations/delusions. Continuing on the medications can maintain the reduction in symptoms. Only 8% of people on antipsychotics will still experience hallucinations over the course of a year. Neuroleptics are dopamine antagonist dopamine hypothesis evidence for schizo.
