But people had been talking about stress related reactions to war eg. war neurosis, shell shock, etc. Phenomenon that"s been discussed for much longer than its recognition in the. Dsm i and ii stressors were seen as triggers of pre existing diathesis. Forms of dysfunction we now call ptsd were classified in other categories according to presenting symptomatology. Multiple forms of dysfunction arise from these triggers. Stress is the trigger for many forms of dysfunction, which now all fall under the category of ptsd. Changed in the vietnam war, as they began to recognize a similarity of symptoms across the many soldiers with the different (back then) disorders. High rates of disorder in soldiers, other researchers were finding similar patterns in survivors of rape and natural disasters. Caused the description of ptsd to coalesce into description of a single disorder, now known as ptsd.
