If you focus on giving the child praise, they"ll only care about image and appearance. If you focus on using competition to socialize a child, later on they"ll think about mostly popularity and rank. The american dream: the belief that america"s a fair place where if you work hard and are talented, you can satisfy your dreams. People who immigrated to the us want to believe that the american dream was real: they were hoping that their children would be able to pursue whatever they want. But the us is an incredibly materialistic culture: since a young age, we are given the message that it"s important to be attractive, popular, and to acquire a lot of stuff.
