The kind of fruit (apple) was never actually specified. Artists interpreted it according to their culture (in the west apples were common). In the beginning when there was nothing except god himself. First there is nothing and then there is creation. In the beginning can also mean that there was stuff but the stuff had no form. This fits more with the idea of evolution. It can also mean the beginning of a new period a period where time is kept.
