SOCI 377 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Social Disorganization Theory, Content Analysis, Functional Requirement
Document Summary
Chicago school was engaging in ethnographies, content analysis etc. but with struct funct. things became more theoretical. The belief that there are both manifest and latent functions of deviance: it is necessary in society and actually a good thing. Also all the things that we normally see as a porbaly actually have a function and are beneficial to society. How social conditions are structured to produce deviance. [social structure] patterned arrangement of factors that may impede or limit our ability to make choices and/or engage in deviance. [agency] our ability to exercise free will and make a choices and/or engage in deviance. Chicago school -> too little social structure leads to deviance (rapid social change = social disorganization and a breakdown of the normative order) Functionalism -> goes even further: social structure can produce strain that results in deviance (e. g. you wanna go to university, but your poor(social structure), so you cant afford it, so it causes strain)
