SOCI 211 Lecture 5: Lecture 5 - Operationalization
Document Summary
Validity refers to the extent of which a measure reflects the meaning of a concept. There are several kinds of validity: face, criterion, construct, content. This could be a problem because people can lie about their income or not know what their income is. Statscan asks on their survey if they can look at people"s tax records to record a valid measure of income. There is an issue of the validity of operationalization. Recalling income is valid, but not as valid as on tax records. Judgement comes from communities of people doing research. Questionnaire interviews require self rated health if they are doing health research. Look if it is associated with the behaviour of religiosity. Things that should be associated with scores on the measure to validate the measure. Data sets often don"t have information on some things. There is no alternative indicator because the data set doesn"t contain that information. There are questions, but not sure if they"re relevant.
