Individuals learning about society they were born into. Individuals learn that they should align themselves to member"s of a category or else there are consequences. Self identification could be voluntary or through ascription process. Self-identification (choosing a category) vs. ascription (assignment of a category by others) There is tension relying relationships between self identification and ascription depending on the racial categorize we are talking about. Category: what you identify with (label of group identity) Social groups are quite unique in individuals among that category. Want to think about relationships between members involved. Relationships usually involves a sense of belonging and peoplehood of all the individuals belonging to the particular category. People who are initially part of category without social group end up forming a social group. Even when transition from category to social group over time if the bonds aren"t kept up it can always revert back to a category (looses significant n terms of sense of belonging for individuals)
