Week 1 social construction of gender theories: interactionist. Mid 20th century (1950s): functionalist paradigm was predominant in sociology. Functionalism: society as a system of interdependent parts that work together to meet the system"s needs and keep it stable. Individuals learned & socialized into roles (involved internalizing social norms) Men as family breadwinners protectors, providers, tough aggressive, characteristics suited for workplace/outside the home. Women as caretakers for their children, home, and husbands kind, cooperative, moral, best suited for private (home/domestic) sphere. Came out of the industrial revolution (began mid 1700s) First time in west world subsistence work done outside home (workplaces) Separate spheres ideology: men belong outside the house, women within. Capitalism grows as revolution continues white men with money became. American standard, as did the stay at home mom. Belief that failing to live up to requirements would create deviance and undermine the social system more crime, poverty, etc. Roles remained unchallenged until the second wave of the women"s movement.
