Argued that we cannot stop being men and women more than we can stop being human beings. Thought of sex roles as a cultural elaboration or that they are built onto the biological differences between men and women. That they built on to them and highlighted them. Functionalist sex roles based on 1950"s stereotypes: men as family breadwinners. Tough, aggressive, competitive --> things you need to survive in a workplace: women as caretakers for their children, home, and husbands o. Came out of the industrial revolution (mid 1700"s)
