Week 1 social construction of gender: structural and integrated. Sex roles: societal norms dictating what behaviours are appropriate for a person based on their actual or perceived sex; socially constructed. Third genders; e. g. indian hijra can represent a gender intermediate state, both, neither, or another category altogether. Gender identity: one"s personal experience of one"s own gender; psychological phenomenon based in biology and socialization. >very important distinction between sex roles and gender identity: Sex roles are form of social construction, no reason they have to be this way. Gender identity is what we decide we think of ourselves as. People learn how to present themselves from their parents in appropriate" ways for their gender/sex categories. Transgenderism: incongruence between one"s biology, sex role, and gender identity. By age 3-5 one"s gender role is known and finalized, but not necessarily congruent with biology in the cases of transgender. Can identify as pre, post, or non-operative transsexuals (if applicable)
