Race refers to an externally imposed system of social categorization and stratification. A race is composed of people whose perceived physical markers are socially significant (especially in creating and maintaining systems of social inequality) No true biological races exist; race is socially constructed. There is may be biological and physical differences between us but there is no clear definition in the range of traits or genes that determine the races. Ethnicity: the distinct cultural normstand values of a social group. Characteristics of ethnic groups include (to varying degrees): o o. The concept of race emerged in modern beginning in the 1500s from the combined effects of the scientific revolution and european colonialism (or imperialism) Scientific revolution - relying on measurement to determine whether or not it exists o. Prior to this, race referred to where you came from. Scientific racism: the use of scientific techniques and hypotheses to sanction the belief in racial superiority, inferiority, or racism.
