Increased criminalization of individuals with mental illness (imi) There exist opportunities at every level of the justice system to divert individuals out and link them to appropriate mental health services. Approximately 40% of imi ill be arrested in their lifetime. Imi are more likely to be stopped for street checks, be the source of complaints and be suspected of an offence than those without imi. 40% of interactions between police and imi involve less serious offences, such as theft, property damage, disorderly conduct, and drug possession. 40% of contacts don"t involve any kind of criminal conduct (mostly call for assistance related to mental health symptom and treatment) Imi are more likely to be disrespectful and resist police intervention. Interactions with the police are for the most part initiated by the police, the imi, or a family member. Imi are over represented in incidences of police fatalities (australia, uk, canada, Usa)however, overall, in police encounters with imi, force is low.
